an
augmented exegesis - installation proposal
A Stage one investigation into the potentials
of peripatetic interaction with augmented information spaces in mixed
reality environments. At the Creativity and Cognition Studios (CCS),

Research question:
"What are the potentials for augmented information spaces and user
interaction in mixed reality environments"?
Key words:
Augmented information, perceptual user interface, peripatetic interaction,
distributive spaces.
The concept:
The 'Augmented Exegesis' is a proposal for a mixed reality installation
artwork that combines both the physical and virtual experience in an
augmented information space. Through the use of dynamic text and image
the installation will explore key issues around the theme of mixed reality
and it's potentials in art practice.
The intention of the installation is to create a rich, over-laid information
environment and user experience, through a combination of physical and
digital interpretations of the texts. Description
of the installation:
Physical space:
Questions and statements (quotes) pertaining to mixed reality issues
are mapped in the physical installation environment. Either through
the use of actual lettering applied to gallery surfaces (walls ceiling
and floor), or through the creation of 3 dimensional artifacts with
typographic surfaces.
Virtual space:
Through the use of wireless, augmented reality 3d stereoscopic glasses,
additional content can be accessed. This extra information will relate
to the physical typographical statements and take the form of short
video sequences and expanded textural analysis. The virtual content
will be triggered by the user looking at interactive nodes incorporated
in the terrestrial texts and will be mapped into 3d dimensional space
as dynamic audio and visual - animated type and video sequences.
Interactive possibilities:
The installation begins to explore the possibilities for interaction
between physical and virtual spaces and the potential of augmented information,
on a number of hierarchical levels.
Level one: Non - augmented observational interaction
The installation allows for a passive experience to be gained by simply
engaging with the physical environment and reading the display texts.
Level two: Augmented interaction
By donning the VR augmented glasses the user is rewarded with additional
digital content which adds to the original real-world statements; audio,
video and dynamic textural content are triggered as the user moves around,
and this content is mapped into the 3d gallery space.
Level three: The introduction of dynamic content.
By linking the textual statements to an online forum and debate there
would be the potential to introduce real-time responses to the subject
matter – contributory material could take the from of text messages
and web cam, video phone media.
